There is an intimacy in using handmade utilitarian wares that drives my passion to make. I strive for my work to adorn the home of the everyday person, while creating a sense of self or shared celebration and bliss.
When making I intend to push the barriers of the technically driven pot. My forms find a balance between dramatic angles and flowing curvilinear lines all while keeping its intended function. The challenge of forming a visually intriguing pot all while maintaining function is where my fascination with clay lies. The clay is only a catalyst for the infinite possibilities it can become.
Many of my forms are derived from the wheel and later manipulated and altered. However, much of my imagination is contingent upon the implication of alternative processes. The exploration of these processes and intuition encourages my continued excitement with clay. While partaking in an art form with such a rich history I strive to honor that history of ceramics yet continue to further pushing the practice.
My fascination with text and calligraphy is also a component to my forms and surface decoration. The intensity and delicacy of line weight often informs my work. I am infatuated with the exchange of loose and tight line work, as well as its precise and spontaneous language. Translating these qualities is one of the many ways I leave the implication of my hand. Whether it is a dart in the pot or a movement of decoration on the surface it connects the user to me as the maker.
The final result is a tactile, utilitarian object that necessitates touch and use. It is my goal to establish this daily relationship between object and user all while generating an everlasting exploration for subtle nuances of the piece. The appreciation of a handmade object can only be found through continual use. My hope is for the work to create moments of bliss through this continual use. The collective utilization of my work, will then establish a ritual of daily blissful moments.
